Touristic Information
Sorrento is a seaside resort located on the northern coast of the Sorrento Peninsula, on a steep tufa terrace overlooking the bay of Naples.
Domain of Syracuse, the Samnites and the Romans, it became a Byzantine possession and, in the ninth century, a free city. In 1133 it was conquered by the Normans and later incorporated into the kingdom of Naples, which follows the events. The shoreline is currently divided into the port area of Marina Piccola and the beach of Marina Grande, many bathing establishments.
To visit the Cathedral, built in the Thousand and renovated in the fifteenth century; Dominova seat, a loggia with arches of the fifteenth century, the remains of a Roman arch and the monument dedicated to the poet Torquato Tasso who was born in this city in the sixteenth century.
In the Museum Correale of Terranova are collections of paintings and decorative arts from the Neapolitan and foreign sixteenth to the nineteenth century, full palate, glasses, clocks and one of the finest collections of porcelain of the eighteenth century.
